§ Mr. Cleaverasked the Minister of Aviation if he will make a statement about the future of Birmingham Airport.
§ Mr. SandysBirmingham Airport was established by the Birmingham Corporation in 1939; but since September, 1939, it has been held on requisition in exercise of powers which lapse at the end of 1960. As a result of discussions between my Department and the Corporation, an agreement has been signed under which the Corporation will, on 1st April, 1960, take over the responsibility for running the airport. However, the Ministry will provide staff and equipment for technical and navigational services and will contribute 60 per cent. of the cost of future capital works approved by the Government. The cost of capital works carried out since 1st April, 1956. will be shared in the same proportions.
165WThe Corporation has agreed to provide accommodation and facilities for the technical and navigational services and to pay to the Ministry 60 per cent. of profits on the future operation of the airport.
The agreement is for twenty-one years. I am arranging for a copy to be placed in the Library.
