57. Mr. Gresham Cookeasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer how much it would cost the Treasury to give a tax allowance of £10 per annum in respect of travel between home and place of business to all Income Tax payers so travelling.
Mr. AmoryThe cost in a full year of allowing a deduction from earned income of £10 to all occupied persons would be £40 million. The cost of the kind of allowances which my hon. Friend envisages would be less than this, but it is not possible to make any estimate because there is not sufficient information available about the number of occupied persons who would qualify.
