HC Deb 29 June 1960 vol 625 cc129-30W
Mr. Russell

asked the Minister of Transport if he is aware that "Halt" signs are frequently ignored by motorists inadvertently; and if he will consider having them painted on a large red board as is done in the Republic of Ireland.

Mr. Marples

I know of no evidence that "Halt—Major Road Ahead" signs used in this country are frequently disobeyed inadvertently. The clarity of our "Halt" sign, with its surmounting ringed triangle, compares well with that of the "Stop" sign used in the Republic of Ireland and conforms closely to European practice. I see no good reason to make a change.
