Mr. G. M. Thomson

asked the Minister of State for Commonwealth Relations if he will give details of the amounts of loans, grants, and other forms of economic assistance made available to the Federation of Malaya since she became an independent member of the Commonwealth.

Grants have been made in aid of:

The cost of the emergency in the Federation £13 million
The development of the Federation's armed forces
(cash) £8 million
(kind) £8 million

General development purposes—approximately £4 million
The building programme of the University of Malaya £308,000

The cost of technical assistance from the date of independence to the end of March, 1960, was approximately £88,000.

An agreement in respect of a Commonwealth Assistance Loan of £2¼ million under Section 3 of the Export Guarantees Act was signed in February of this year.
