asked the Minister of State for Commonwealth Relations if he will give details of the amounts of loans, grants, and other forms of economic assistance made available by Her Majesty's Government to Ghana since she became an independent member of the Commonwealth.

Mr. Alport

The assistance given to Ghana since her independence consists of

  1. (a) A contribution of £350,000 towards the cast of two new Halls of Residence at the Kumasi College of Technology. This sum represented the unexpended balance allocated from Colonial Development and Welfare Funds before independence, and was then given as a grant for the above purpose.
  2. 79
  3. (b) Assistance under the Mutual Technical Assistance Agreement. From the date of Ghana's independence until 31st March of this year this totalled about £97,000.
