§ 33. Mr. Stonehouseasked the Secretary of State for the Colonies why he has banned the United National Independence Party in the Western Province of Northern Rhodesia; and when the ban will be withdrawn.
§ Mr. Iain MacleodThe ban was imposed because, as I explained to the House on 17th May, the general atmosphere of lawlessness in Northern Rhodesia was undoubtedly ascribable to the activities of adherents of this party particularly in the Western Province. The order declaring twelve branches of U.N.I.P. to be unlawful societies will be revoked in respect of either all or some of them as soon as the Governor is satisfied that this can be done without endangering public security.
