32. Mr. Stonehouse

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies if he will list the newspapers allowed to detainees in the Manyani Special Detention Camp. Kenya.

The following newspapers are at present allowed regularly to the detainees in Manyani:

  1. (1) East African Standard in English daily.
  2. (2) Pamoja, in Swahili. A magazine issued monthly which covers general policy, progress and news in Kenya.
  3. (3) Siku Hizi in English and Swahili. A monthly magazine covering items of interest in the Commonwealth and matters of general interest.
  4. (4) Nyanza Citizen (North);
  5. (5) Nyanza Citizen (South).
    • These papers which are issued fortnightly in English and Swahili are produced locally in Nyanza Province and provide news of local and of Kenya interest.
  6. (6) Shahidi, in Swahili, is a fortnightly paper of the same nature as the Nyanza Citizen but concerns itself with the Rift Valley Province.
  7. (7) Matemo in the Kikuyu language is produced fortnightly and is of the same nature as the previous three papers but concerns the Central Province.
  8. (8) Sauti ya Pwani in Swahili is produced fortnightly and is of the same nature as the foregoing papers but concerns the Coast Province.
