ButlerIn 1959 there were 4,635 convictions in the magistrates' courts in England and Wales for the offences of driving or being in charge of a vehicle while under the influence of drink or a drug. In 987 or 21.3 per cent. of the cases the persons concerned were disqualified for driving for periods of over twelve months; in another 2,727 or 58.8 per cent, of the cases the persons concerned were disqualified for driving for periods of over six months and up to twelve months. No figures are available in respect of cases dealt with by the higher courts.
