HC Deb 14 July 1960 vol 626 cc124-5W
69. Mr. Prior

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food whether he is now able to make a statement on methods of controlling coypu in Norfolk and Suffolk.

Mr. Hare

I have carefully considered the representations that have been made to me regarding the spread of coypu in East Anglia and the damage they are causing. I feel that some help should be given to farmers and others in dealing with these creatures on an organised basis, and I accordingly propose to extend the 50 per cent, grant to rabbit clearance societies to include approved expenditure on the control of coypu. My technical officers will give advice and guidance on the conduct of the campaign.

Mr. de Freitas

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food whether he is aware of the continuing spread of coypus in the Eastern counties and of the damage caused to crops and river banks; and if he will now make a statement about the steps he is taking to tackle this pest.
