EcclesProvisional returns show that in the summer of 1959 15,480 candidates from 970 secondary modern schools—just over a quarter of all secondary modern schools—sat for the General Certificate of Education at Ordinary level. The average number of subjects offered was 3.9, the average number passed, 1.9.
