§ 80. Mr. Wallasked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he will make a statement on his visit to the three East African territories
Mr. MacleodThe purpose of my visit to East Africa last December was to meet the people in each territory on their home ground, to hear what they had to say, and by so doing get a better understanding of their many problems, political, social and economic. My visit to Kenya was particularly useful as it enabled me to meet those who are now in London for the Conference. My visits to Uganda and Tanganyika allowed me to have some discussions on constitutional matters especially the next steps following the submission of the Report of the Wild Constitutional Committee in Uganda, and the Governor's statement in the Legislative Council of Tanganyika of 15th December regarding constitutional advance in that territory. I paid a short visit to Zanzibar where I was able to meet His Highness the Sultan and have discussions with representatives of the political parties
