HC Deb 26 February 1960 vol 618 c94W
Mr. Hocking

asked the Minister of Transport if, in the light of experience gained, he is satisfied with the cross-sectional design of M.1; and whether he will consider the provision of a kerb to the edge of the highway.

Mr. Marples

A careful study is being made of the lessons to be learnt from M.1. It is too soon to reach final conclusions. For safety reasons it is not desirable to provide raised kerbs at the edges of the carriageway where they may be struck by fast-moving vehicles. Kerbs to mark the outer edge of the hard shoulders would interfere with drainage, but other means of defining this edge are being considered.

Mr. Hocking

asked the Minister of Transport if he will consider making provision for the improvement of the hard shoulder to the M.1, so that vehicles using it may do so without getting into difficulty.

Mr. Marples

The hard shoulders of grass construction on M.1 have suffered considerable damage through heavy usage while still immature. I am examining urgently the measures which might be taken to strengthen them.
