HC Deb 09 February 1960 vol 617 c37W
Mr. F. Noel-Baker

asked the Minister of Transport what is the cost of work at present in progress at the intersection of A.4 and the Devizes to Swindon road; what is the purpose of this work; whether it is part of a larger project; and why traffic signals are not installed at this intersection.

Mr. Marples

A roundabout is being constructed at a cost of £30,000 in order to make this junction safer by eliminating a dangerous left-hand stagger on the Class I road. This improvement is being carried out at the same time as a widening of the road westward from the junction at a cost of a further £57,000. Traffic lights would be unsuitable at this intersection because of the volume and speed of trunk road traffic.
