asked the Secretary to the Treasury whether he has completed his consideration of the memorial submitted by the Sheriffs-Substitute Association requesting a review of their financial status.

Yes. After a review of responsibilities in the judicial field the Government have decided that the salaries of the lower judiciary in Scotland should be improved with effect from 1st January, 1961. The new salaries will be as follows:

Sheriff of Lanarkshire 5,000
Chairman, Scottish Land Court 4,700
Sheriff of the Lothians and Peebles 4,700
Sheriffs-substitute Group A 4,400
Sheriffs-substitute Group B 3,750
Sheriffs-substitute Group C 3,250
The annual cost of the increases is about £14,000.
