HC Deb 21 December 1960 vol 632 c185W
Mr. Stonehouse

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he is aware that the remand home waiting period in the County of London and elsewhere is often two or three months; and if he will make arrangements to take time spent in remand homes into account in arranging the home leave of girls committed to approved schools.

Mr. R. A. Butler

Nearly 80 per cent. of boys are admitted to approved schools within one month after committal; but some boys and most girls may have a waiting period of up to two months or more. In deciding when to allow a girl home leave, I understand that the managers may take into account any period previously spent in a remand home. I am considering whether there is any guidance I can usefully give to managers on this matter in the present circumstances.
