§ 53. Mr. Hiltonasked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food how much money has been spent by his Department on research into fowl pest during the last 12 months; and how much has been paid out in compensation as a result of fowl pest during the same period.
Mr. VaneIt is not possible to assess the cost of research into fowl pest separately from other similar activities at the Department's Veterinary Laboratories and elsewhere. During the year ended 30th November, 1960, approximately £4.1 million has been incurred in compensation of which over a quarter was paid out as a result of outbreaks in December, 1959.
§ Mr. Priorasked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he is satisfied with the policy of slaughter for fowl pest, in view of the changed conditions in the poultry industry in recent years; and if he will make a statement.
