Miss Herbison

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland (1) what percentage of babies was born in hospital in Lanarkshire during the years 1956. 1957. 1958 and 1959;

(2) how many hospital beds are still required in Lanarkshire to meet the recommendations of the Montgomery Report that 70 per cent. of all babies should be born in hospital.

Mr. Maclay

The following are the percentages of births to mothers resident in Lanarkshire which took place in hospitals and nursing homes:

1956 1957 1958 1959
60 60 64 65

To meet the recommendations of the Montgomery Report about 130 additional obstetric and ante-natal beds are needed in Lanarkshire; 70 of these will be provided when the new Bellshill Maternity Hospital opens next year and a scheme for additional maternity beds at the Alexander Hospital, Coatbridge, is completed.
