HC Deb 14 April 1960 vol 621 c173W
Mr. Arthur Skeffington

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies why the number of scholarship students from Tanganyika studying in the United Kingdom is less than the number from Uganda, Kenya, Zanzibar and Somali-land, despite the very large number of those in the student age group in Tanganyika.

Mr. Iain Macleod

Secondary education in Tanganyika is so far less developed than in the neighbouring territories. The current education programme provides for considerable development in middle, secondary and technical education, which within the limits of available finance, should result in a further increase in the number of scholarship awards in the next few years. The number of scholarship students from Tanganyika in the United Kingdom has doubled in the past year. The majority of scholarship students from the Somali-land Protectorate are artisans and technicians.
