Mr. Masonasked the Minister of Education, as representing the Minister for Science, if he will give the number 158W of scientists who have emigrated to the United States of America and Canada over the past five years, and also the number of scientists who have been recruited by the Civil Service Commission and the Atomic Energy Authority to return to this country, giving separately the figures for 1958 and 1959 and the first three months of 1960.
§ Sir D. EcclesThere are no complete statistics of scientists who have emigrated to the United States or Canada. In 1958 seven scientists were recruited in America by the Civil Service Commission and the Atomic Energy Authority; in 1959 sixteen were so recruited. Candidates are being interviewed for 1960, and I am informed that appointments are being made.
