HC Deb 14 April 1960 vol 621 cc170-1W
Commander Pursey

asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government and Minister for Welsh Affairs the number of sewers which discharge their untreated effluent into the River Chelmer, above Fullbridge, Maldon, Essex; whether the Maldon County Council offices sewer is included; and what steps he will take to reduce the pollution of the River Chelmer throughout its length.

Sir K. Joseph

Five sewers discharge untreated effluent into the River Chelmer above Fullbridge. The sewer serving the Borough Council offices is not included in this number.

The river board is effectively reducing pollution here. My right hon. Friend will consider any proposals submitted including one shortly expected for the full treatment of the Borough's sewage discharge to this river.

Commander Pursey

asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government and Minister for Welsh Affairs the last occasion on which a pollution inspector inspected the River Chelmer, above Full-bridge, Maldon, Essex, in hot weather; and what was the nature of his report on the pollution and its results.

Sir K. Joseph

The river is inspected at monthly intervals. I am informed that on 14th July, 1959, the river was inspected on behalf of the Essex River Board at a time when its temperature reached 21° centigrade; and that the sample of water taken was found to be reasonably clean river water.
