HC Deb 14 April 1960 vol 621 c172W
Mr. R. Edwards

asked the Secretary State for the Colonies what is the reason for the transfer of battalions of troops from Nigeria into the Southern Cameroons without the prior consent of the Premier of the Southern Cameroons Government.

Mr. Iain Macleod

Under the Constitution of Nigeria defence is a federal matter for which the Southern Cameroons Government have no responsibility. Additional troops were sent to the Southern Cameroons by the Governor-General with the agreement of the Nigerian Federal Prime Minister to protect the frontier of the Federation.
