HC Deb 14 April 1960 vol 621 cc141-2W
Sir E. Errington

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he is aware, in relation to the importation of red verona and yellow torri marble chippings, that certain importers have to pay duty on deposit before Customs clearances to enable the authority to find out whether these materials are dutiable, and that a delay of six weeks frequently occurs before a decision is reached whether duty is payable or not, thereby making business difficult; and whether he will take steps to clarify the position in regard to these materials to avoid the uncertainty in the trade and the consequent loss.

Mr. Barber

Some importations of dutiable chippings have been declared as exempt by the importer, and Customs sampling of goods described as marble chippings has therefore been necessary. Decisions on individual consignments are given as soon as tests are completed and expert advice is available. As my hon. Friend is aware, an application by importers for a change in the tariff to elimnate these distinctions is being considered by my right hon. Friend the President of the Board of Trade.
