HC Deb 11 April 1960 vol 621 cc97-8W
Mr. Kershaw

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food whether he will so amend the Merchandise Marks (Imported Goods) No. 3 Order, 1934, as to ensure that the country of origin is indicated on all bacon sold in shops.

Mr. Godber

The question whether this order should be amended to require imported bacon cut into slices or rashers to bear an indication of origin has been referred to the Standing Committee set up under the Merchandise Marks Act, 1926. The Committee will hold a public inquiry on 2nd May, 1960, to consider the matter.

There is no power under the Act to require the actual country of origin to be indicated. The word "Empire" or "foreign", as the case may be, may be used as an alternative to the country of origin.
