HC Deb 11 April 1960 vol 621 cc106-7W
Mr. Malcolm MacMillan

asked the Minister of Defence (1) from how many representative bodies, elected and otherwise, respectively, and individuals in the Isle of South Uist he has received messages in support of the proposal to make the Hebrides guided missile range available for the training of German forces;

(2) if he will specify the evidence obtained by him that the inhabitants of the Isle of South Uist are not averse to the offer by Her Majesty's Government of facilities for the training of German forces in the use of tactical nuclear weapons in that area; and what steps he has taken to assess the local support for the contrary point of view.

Mr. Watkinson

I have not received any representations or made inquiries on this matter, but I am aware of the recent B.B.C. television programme in which a number of inhabitants of South Uist gave their views on this subject.
