HC Deb 11 April 1960 vol 621 c90W
75. Mr. Sorensen

asked the Minister of Health if he is aware of the recent death of a hospital patient through a defective cardiac monitor; why there was no effective examination of the apparatus in this case; what evidence he has of similar cases; and what action he has taken to ensure that in future all hospital electrical apparatus used in the treatment of diseases is thoroughly inspected before use.

Miss Pitt

I am aware of this sad event, and I should like to take this opportunity of expressing my sympathy with the patient's relatives. Inquiries into the circumstances are not yet complete and when they are I will write to the hon. Member.

I am not aware of any similar case. My right hon. and learned Friend relies on hospital authorities to arrange for regular inspections of this kind, and I am sending to the hon. Member a copy of the Safety Code issued for their guidance.
