HC Deb 05 April 1960 vol 621 c28W
47. Mr. Grimond

asked the Prime Minister if, as a result of his talks in Washington, he will make a new approach to the Six with a view to avoiding a split in Western Europe.

The Prime Minister

I have always made our position on this matter clear— namely that we should deplore a split in Western Europe. The immediate problem of what is to happen on 1st July is being studied by the special Trade Committee in Paris. We and our partners in the European Free Trade Association shall lose no opportunity of exploring with the Governments of the Six any longer-term solution which seems likely to be acceptable.
