HC Deb 04 April 1960 vol 621 cc22-3W
Mr. Pavitt

asked the Minister of Education if he will supply a list of the 30 corporate bodies or communities which constitute the United Kingdom Commission on United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation; and if he will state the methods used to secure their co-operation and advice.

Sir D. Eccles

As I informed the hon. Member in reply to his Questions of 17th and 31st March, I am now reconstituting the United Kingdom National Commission for U.N.E.S.C.O. and invitations to join the new Commission have been sent out.

In addition to the main Commission there will be advisory committees dealing with:

  • Education.
  • Natural Sciences (in co-operation with the Royal Society).
  • Social Sciences.
  • Comparative Law (in co-operation with United Kingdom Committee of Comparative Law).
  • Arts.
  • Humanities.
  • Museums (in co-operation with the United Kingdom Committee of the International Council of Museums).
  • Libraries.
  • East-West Major Project.
  • Mass Communications.
  • Welsh Committee.

These committees are expected to meet from time to time to advise on the implementation of U.N.E.S.C.O.'s programme in the United Kingdom.

The Secretariat for the main Commission and most of the committees will be provided by the Ministry of Education.
