HC Deb 04 April 1960 vol 621 cc24-5W
Mr. Biggs-Davison

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what extra expenditure was incurred by the Metropolitan Police in keeping order during recent incidents outside South Africa House.

Mr. R. A. Butler

It is not at present possible to say whether any extra expenditure was involved.

Mr. Biggs-Davison

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department to what extent officers of the Metropolitan Police worked overtime, were denied leave, and diverted from normal duty as a result of incidents outside South Africa House.

Mr. R. A. Butler

A substantial number of officers had to be diverted from their normal duties to deal with these disturbances. But I am glad to say that they did not have to work for unduly long hours and that the number of officers whose weekly rest day had to be cancelled was small.
