asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many young persons aged 17 and 18 years were remanded in prison in the most recent period of 12 months for which figures are available.

The information is not available in the form requested by the hon Member, but in 1958, 7,133 boys and 482 girls aged 17, but under 21 years of age, were remanded to prison.
