At 31st October, 1959, there were 6,715 boys and 1,270 girls in approved schools. These were allocated among the schools, according to age on admission, as follows:—

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what compensation is available to owners of property whose premises are broken into and damaged by those serving sentence in an approved school.

Mr. R. A. Butler

The managers of an approved school may be authorised, where appropriate, to pay compensation on anex gratia basis for loss or damage caused by absconders from the school.
