asked the Minister of Power to what extent opencast mining is still taking place within the North Staffordshire area; what is the output; what are the stocks of opencast mined coal; and when it will cease being mined.

Production in North Staffordshire in 1959 is expected to be 175,000 tons. There are now two sites, both of which will cease production within the next twelve months. On 31st October, stocks were 82,000 tons.
