103. Mr. Chetwynd

asked the Attorney-General how many cases in which legal aid certificates have been granted have not been pursued because the applicant has not been able to pay the contributions assessed on his in come; and whether he will now intro duce more generous scales of assessment.

I regret that the information asked for in the first part of the Question is not available. With regard to the second part, the Government propose to introduce legislation during this Session to amend the financial provisions of the Legal Aid and Advice Act, 1949.

104. Mr. Shinwell

asked the Attorney-General how many applicants for free legal aid since 1955 have received such aid without being asked to make a contribution themselves.
