HC Deb 17 November 1959 vol 613 cc110-1W
79. Mr. E. L. Mallalieu

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what decisions have been reached about the future of the British Cameroons.

92. Mr. N. Pannell

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies if he will make a statement on the result of the recent plebiscite in the Northern Cameroons under British mandate regarding the future status of that Territory.

93. Mr. R. Edwards

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether agreement has now been reached in the Southern Cameroons on the questions to be submitted for the plebiscite relating to the future of this Trusteeship Territory.

Mr. Iain Macleod

There was a plebiscite in the Northern Cameroons on the 7th November at which a majority voted in favour of deferring a decision on the future of the territory until a later date. We shall now consider the implications of this result, which I emphasise represents only a decision to defer the decision. The United Nations resolution on the future of the Southern Cameroons was summarised in my reply to the hon. Member for Eton and Slough (Mr. Brockway) on 3rd November.
