HC Deb 12 November 1959 vol 613 c64W
69. Mr. Lipton

asked the Minister of Transport whether he has investigated the causes of the accidents that have taken place on the M.1 road; and what action he is taking to deal with these causes.

Mr. Marples

Investigation of the causes of accidents is a matter for the police in the first instance. It would be unwise to draw general conclusions from the first few days' operation of the new motorway when drivers were unaccustomed to motorway driving techniques, especially as some of the accidents occurred in dense fog. I shall have all accident reports analysed very carefully and will take such action as is shown to be called for.
