§ 9. Mr. A. Lewisasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will give an estimate of the cost to Her Majesty's Treasury of introducing a retirement and pension scheme for Members of Parliament based on that now operated for civil servants.
Mr. AmoryThe Civil Service superannuation scheme is based on the concept of a career service which provides the necessary actuarial data, for instance, ages of entry and retirement and length of service. The conditions of service in this House do not provide data or assumptions of this kind on which a pension scheme like the Civil Service one could be founded. I am sorry, therefore, that I cannot give an estimate of the cost of such a scheme.
