HC Deb 09 November 1959 vol 613 c8W
49. Mr. A. Fraser

asked the Minister of Labour the numbers in civil employment at the latest available date, and for the corresponding month in 1951 for Great Britain, Scotland, London and south-eastern England, respectively.

Mr. Heath

In May, 1958, the figure for Great Britain was 21,440,000, Scotland 2,075,000 and London and South-Eastern Region 5,400,000. Owing to a change made in 1955 in the method of estimating regional figures, it is not possible to make an exact comparison, but it is estimated that between 1951 and 1958, the numbers of employees in employment increased by over 900,000 in Great Britain, showed little change in Scotland, and increased by 350,000 in the London and South-Eastern Region.
