HC Deb 05 November 1959 vol 612 cc71-2W
65. Mr. Hector Hughes

asked the Minister of Education, as representing the Minister for Science, if he will specify the amount of Government money invested in the new Hydrodynamics Laboratory of the National Physical Laboratory; and if he will make a statement upon the plans for its work and the number and nature of its staff.

Sir D. Eccles

The new Hydrodynamics Laboratory has cost about £2,000,000 and will provide up-to-date facilities for testing ship designs, particularly in reproducing more realistic sea conditions than has been previously possible. Research will be conducted to extend basic knowledge upon the resistance, propulsion and seagoing qualities of ships and tests will be carried out on new ship designs for industry. The staff at the new laboratory number nearly 70 of whom 10 are scientific officers.
