HC Deb 04 November 1959 vol 612 c64W
Mr. Hector Hughes

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will state the amount of the damage to persons and property in the north-east of Scotland caused by the great storm there this week; and what steps he has taken to mitigate the loss inflicted on the victims and to bring comfort to them and their families.

Mr. Maclay

According to my information, as a result of the storm of 27th October six lives were lost, including those of five fishermen, and about twenty-five people received hospital treatment for injuries. Several fishing boats were either sunk or damaged: about half-a-million cubic feet of timber were blown down: and there were a number of cases of damage to the roofs of buildings. I sympathise with those who suffered from the storm, but I have no evidence to suggest that special Government help is called for.
