§ Mr. Hector Hughesasked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will state the amount of the damage to persons and property in the north-east of Scotland caused by the great storm there this week; and what steps he has taken to mitigate the loss inflicted on the victims and to bring comfort to them and their families.
§ Mr. MaclayAccording to my information, as a result of the storm of 27th October six lives were lost, including those of five fishermen, and about twenty-five people received hospital treatment for injuries. Several fishing boats were either sunk or damaged: about half-a-million cubic feet of timber were blown down: and there were a number of cases of damage to the roofs of buildings. I sympathise with those who suffered from the storm, but I have no evidence to suggest that special Government help is called for.
