HC Deb 04 November 1959 vol 612 c50W
67. Mr. Dodds

asked the Minister of; Transport, in the interests of clean air, what special efforts are being made, or are likely to be made, to check excessive diesel fumes from vehicles and to sea that a reasonable standard of maintenance of lorries and omnibuses is observed.

Mr. Marples

Enforcement of the law relating to the emission of smoke by road vehicles is a matter for the police. My technical officers take every opportunity to impress on both the operators and drivers of commercial vehicles that smoke can be eliminated if diesel engines are adequately maintained and correctly adjusted, and if the vehicles are properly driven.
