HC Deb 04 November 1959 vol 612 c59W
105. Mr. Hale

asked the President of the Board of Trade what is the most recent estimate available of the amount of compensation payable from public funds in respect of the scrapping and replacement of machinery in the cotton textile industry, and the amount of compensation which will be payable to employees for loss of employment, giving in each case the number of firms and the number of employees involved.

Mr. Erroll

£11 million is payable from public funds as compensation for scrapping and some 500 firms are involved. The costs of compensating employees are borne entirely by the industry, and it is not possible for me to estimate the total amount or the numbers involved.
