HC Deb 04 November 1959 vol 612 c48W
69. Mr. Grimond

asked the Minister of Transport why the Chiswick flyover was filled instead of being of open construction; and how many hand-finished bricks were used.

Mr. Marples

This form of construction was used to economise in the use of steel, which was scarce when the design was prepared, and because it was economical. The 600,000 machine-made sand-faced bricks used for the facing also acted as shuttering to the concrete backing.
