§ 69. Mr. Grimondasked the Minister of Transport why the Chiswick flyover was filled instead of being of open construction; and how many hand-finished bricks were used.
§ Mr. MarplesThis form of construction was used to economise in the use of steel, which was scarce when the design was prepared, and because it was economical. The 600,000 machine-made sand-faced bricks used for the facing also acted as shuttering to the concrete backing.
