HC Deb 03 November 1959 vol 612 cc41-2W
Miss Herbison

asked the Minister of Labour if he will list the collieries which have been closed in the Lanarkshire North Constituency since 1951 and the number of jobs lost as the result of the closures.

Mr. Heath

Since 1951, Headless Cross No. 2, Stanemine, Stanepit, East Benhar, Calderhead, Southfield and Blairmuckhill collieries have been closed. Before closure these collieries employed 1,300 men and closures were arranged so far as possible to fit in with development of collieries elsewhere so as to make it possible to transfer redundant miners to other pits. After allowances for the new jobs elsewhere, the net loss of jobs was 379.
