HC Deb 14 May 1959 vol 605 cc186-7W
Colonel Beamish

asked the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster in which countries the sale of British publications is being adversely affected by books and periodicals in English, from foreign sources, being sold at excessively low prices; from what main sources, and with what apparent objects, this competition arises; and when he will be in a position to announce the results of the present study of ways of encouraging the flow o5 British publications overseas.

Dr. Hill

There have been very large exports of books and periodicals in English at low prices by several countries including particularly the Soviet Union and China. These exports have been developed primarily for propaganda purposes and they do not seem, in the main, to have affected commercial sales of British books. I hope to announce the results of the present study soon after the House re-assembles.
