HC Deb 13 May 1959 vol 605 c140W
Mr. Callaghan

asked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation what tonnage of trade passed through the ports of London and Liverpool, on the one hand, and the rest of the major ports of Great Britain, on the other, in 1938, 1948, and 1958.

Mr. Watkinson

The tonnages of cargoes in the foreign and coastal trades dealt with at the ports of London and Liverpool and by the United Kingdom as a whole in 1938, 1948 and 1958 were as follows:

Million tons
1938 1948 1958
London 38 37 51
Liverpool 14 14 16
United Kingdom 180 150 225

1. The tonnages for Liverpool relate to the years ended 30th June. 1938, and the calendar 1948 and 1958 and exclude transhipments.

2. The tonnages for Liverpool relate to the years ended 30th June, 1938, and the calendar 1948 and1958 and exclude transshipment.

3. The figures for the United Kingdom are estimates, relate to calendar years and include the relatively small amount of import and export traffic carried by air. Coastal cargoes have been counted twice, once for the ports of loading and once for the ports of discharge.
