Mr. Hector Hughes

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland the number, ages and sexes of the patients in Caldwell House, Uplamoor, and in Woodlands House, respectively; how long each patient has been in each of these houses; how long each is expected to remain there; and how often and how many vacancies for posts occur in each of these houses.

There are 54 girls and 74 boys in Caldwell House and 44 girls

and 75 boys in Woodlands. Both institutions are occupied by low-grade mentally defective children, many of whom are also physically handicapped. Few can be discharged and they are usually transferred to other institutions at 16. Vacancies are filled as they occur. In 1958, 29 patients were admitted to Caldwell House and 16 to Woodlands. The other information requested cannot be supplied without considerable research.
