HC Deb 11 May 1959 vol 605 c109W
Dr. King

asked the Paymaster-General if he will give an estimate of the amount of dollars saved by refining oil at Esso, Fawley, in 1948 and in 1958, respectively.

Mr. Maudling

Without the refinery, products would have to be imported instead of crude oil, and in 1958 the United Kingdom's import bill would have been increased by the equivalent of some £20 million. It is not possible to give an estimate of the dollar content of this figure. In 1948 refining at Fawley was only on a small scale.
