HC Deb 04 May 1959 vol 605 c8W
72. Mr. Harold Davies

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he will make a statement on the future of the pig industry.

Mr. John Hare

The Government's policy for the pig industry remains that set out in the White Paper presented to Parliament in November, 1956 (Cmnd. 24). It is to ensure, by guaranteed prices, a fair return to producers of all types of pigs. At the same time we want to encourage the industry to produce what the consumer wants at the lowest reasonable cost; and it was with this in mind that the Government set up the Pig Industry Development Authority.
