HC Deb 04 May 1959 vol 605 cc5-6W
64. Mr. Hector Hughes

asked the Minister of Labour in view of the increasing unemployment in ship-repairing yards in Aberdeen, which results in loss to the workers and to national productivity and affects adversely the intake of foreign currency, what action he is taking to find jobs for those who are unemployed.

Mr. lain Macleod

The recent increase in unemployment in the shipbuilding and ship-repairing industries in Aberdeen was due to a trade dispute. My local officers continue to assist unemployed workers from all industries by submitting them to notified vacancies.

65. Mr. Hector Hughes

asked the Minister of Labour if he is aware that strikes in several inter-related trades are causing unemployment in Aberdeen; and if he will, in consultation with the President of the Board of Trade, investigate persons who have been continuously unemployed for more than three months.

Mr. Iain Macleod

The following table gives the information desired so far as it is available. Separate figures are not available for Glastonbury and Wincanton. Glastonbury is in the area of the Street Employment Exchange and Wincanton in the area of the Yeovil Employment Exchange.

the circumstances of this situation in order to restore employment and prevent further loss of productivity, exports and foreign currency.

Mr. Iain Macleod

I am aware that there have been three strikes this year in one firm, and that the last stoppage caused some temporary unemployment. As I said in my reply to the hon. Member for Aberdeen, South (Lady Tweedsmuir) on 29th April, I understand that work has now been resumed.
