The following table sets out the number of men who joined local authority fire brigades in England and Wales, and the number of men who retired, resigned or died, in each of the three years 1953 to 1957.

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether, in view of the introduction of a general grant and the discontinuance of Fire Service grant, he intends to maintain the existing control of pay and other conditions of service of members of fire brigades under Section 17 of the Fire Services Act, 1947.

No. It is proposed to introduce legislation at a suitable opportunity to repeal so much of Section 17 of the Fire Services Act, 1947, as relates to pay and other conditions of service, with the exception of discipline.
