HC Deb 26 March 1959 vol 602 cc177-8W
Mr. McAdden

asked the Minister of Education how many extra teachers he estimates would be required to reduce all classes in both junior and senior schools to a maximum of 30; and by how much this total would be increased if the leaving age were raised to 16.

Mr. Geoffrey Lloyd

To reduce all classes to a maximum of 30 by 1965 would require about 110,000 more teachers than there are at present in maintained schools. If the school leaving age were to be raised to 16 by the same time, a further 24,000 teachers would be needed.
